Did you know the California Legislature recently approved $400 million to increase the number of students who complete the A-G requirements, making them eligible to enroll in the UC and CSU campuses after graduation¹? How will your school district create a plan to best utilize the A-G Completion Improvement Grant resources to benefit students?

School districts with A-G completion rates above 67% qualify for a success grant, and those under that percentage qualify for an opportunity grant. Find out your district’s A-G completion rate here

Grant funds are to be used for activities that directly support pupil access to, and successful completion of, the A-G requirements, including:

  • Providing counselors, administrators, and teachers with professional development opportunities to improve the local educational agency's A-G completion rate.

  • Developing comprehensive advising plans and pupil supports, including tutoring programs, to improve the local educational agency's A-G completion rate.

  • Expanding access to coursework or other opportunities to satisfy A-G course requirements to all pupils, including unduplicated pupils.

  • Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate fees for unduplicated pupils.1

Hatching Results successfully partners with districts and counties across California to equitably increase rates of enrollment in and completion of A-G courses, along with other postsecondary readiness metrics. Through training and consultation to transform school counseling programs, we support both the technical and adaptive challenges needed to address complex systems issues, such as increases in A-G course completion. We partnered with the Shasta County Office of Education and supported their work to achieve the following outcomes:

A-G course completion rates improved by 21% in four years through…

  • Providing training and coaching to all secondary school counselors to incorporate system wide practices that demonstrate a belief in the benefits of a rigorous high school education including A-G courses and/or completion of a CTE program

  • Developing  and teaching college and career classroom lessons with assessments across Shasta County high schools

  • Creating a data sharing MOU with our local community college to account for dual enrollment courses within A-G completion

  • Reviewing and updating data entry systems to ensure accurate college and career data

  • Marketing A-G requirements county-wide (along with other postsecondary flyers and sharing with Shasta County middle schools

All California school districts with students in grades 9-12 are scheduled to receive A-G Completion Improvement Grant funding to spend by the 2025-26 school year. To utilize these monies, districts are to create and submit basic implementation plans by April 2021 describing how they will use the funds to supplement and not supplant other work, with intentionality around the work to support low-income, foster, and English learner students.

How can Hatching Results partner to support improvement in A-G completion in your district? Through consultation and training, we work with administrators, counselors, and other identified educators in areas that include…

  • Understanding why A-G course completion is important for students, regardless of their postsecondary goals.

  • Connecting college and career readiness to students’ social determinants of health to positively impact students ability to thrive in whichever postsecondary path they pursue.

  • Supporting districts and schools to understand the College and Career Readiness Indicators measures in order to optimize performance on the California Dashboard.

  • Disaggregating A-G data by student groups to identify successes and areas for improvement.

  • Providing professional development on topics including interpreting the data, developing and implementing comprehensive advising plans, analyzing transcripts, and shifting mindsets to support A-G completion increases.

  • Consulting with district and site administrators, counselors, and other education leaders to identify and modify structures and systems that may be inhibiting A-G completion rates.

  • Identify and remedy systems issues in reporting A-G data in Calpads

  • Supporting the development of a comprehensive, equity-focused A-G Completion Improvement Grant Plan.

Please let Hatching Results know how we can help you accomplish your district goals to support improvement in A-G completion and other postsecondary outcomes for every student!
